Long-Distance Residential Moving

Why Choosing the Right
Long-Distance Mover Matters
Beyond proper licensing and insurance, choosing the right long-distance mover comes down to reliability, communication, and experience. A long-distance move involves far more coordination than a local move, and working with a company you trust can make a significant difference in how smooth the process feels.
At Marquette Movers, we specialize in long-distance moving services in Michigan and understand the importance of clear communication and accountability from start to finish. From your first call to final delivery, our goal is to make sure you always know what’s happening with your move and who to contact if questions come up.
A Local Team You Can Trust
At Marquette Movers, we focus on delivering a higher level of customer service than many people expect from a moving company. When you reach out for an estimate, you’ll speak directly with Andrew or Zachary—real people from our local team. There are no call centers, automated phone trees, or third-party representatives. This direct communication helps ensure your move is planned accurately and handled with care. If you’d like to talk through your specific move or request an estimate, you’re always welcome to contact our team directly.

Locally Owned, Not a Franchise
Marquette Movers is a locally owned, family-run moving company based here in Marquette, Michigan. We are not a franchise, and we do not subcontract work to national van lines or outside companies. Because your move stays with our team the entire time: You always know where your belongings are. There are no third-party handoffsYou can contact our office at any point for updates. This level of accountability is especially important for long-distance and interstate moves.

Experienced Movers Not Subcontractors
Our team of movers are trained professionals who have worked with us for multiple seasons. We do not rely on day laborers or subcontracted crews. Every move is handled by our own employees, from loading to delivery. Part of our philosophy as a business is taking care of our employees so they can take care of you. We offer a living wage and benefits such as gym memberships, bonus pay, and flexible scheduling. This approach leads to lower turnover, consistent crews, and a higher level of professionalism on every job. Many customers highlight this consistency and care in their customer reviews especially when it comes to long-distance moves.
Fast, Reliable Delivery Times.
Large national moving companies may take one to two weeks to deliver belongings after loading. As a smaller, independent company, we’re able to provide much faster turnaround times. In most cases, we guarantee delivery within 24–36 hours of loading. Because we handle transportation ourselves, you can call our office at any point to receive real-time updates on your move’s progress.

How Are Long-Distance Moves Priced?
Long-distance moves are typically priced based on time and distance. When you request a quote from Marquette Movers, we aim to be clear and transparent from the beginning. We provide an itemized estimate that outlines all expected costs, helping prevent surprise charges that are unfortunately common with long-distance moves.
To create the most accurate estimate possible, we take into account: A detailed inventory of your belongings, pickup and delivery locations, access details at both locations. If our crew completes your move faster than estimated, your final cost reflects that reduced time.

Long-Distance Residential Moving FAQ
Upper Peninsula & Interstate Moving Services
Planning a long-distance move requires clear coordination, structured pricing, and a licensed carrier you can trust. Below are answers to the most common questions homeowners ask when relocating to or from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
What qualifies as a long-distance move?
A long-distance move typically involves relocating across state lines (interstate moving) or traveling a significant distance within Michigan. If your move crosses state boundaries — such as moving from Marquette to Wisconsin, Illinois, or another state — it is classified as an interstate move and must be performed by a carrier with active federal authority.
We assist with long-distance residential moves connecting the Upper Peninsula with Lower Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and surrounding Midwest states.
Are you licensed for interstate moves?
Yes. For interstate moves, movers must operate under an active USDOT number and MC authority issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). We comply with applicable federal and state regulations and carry appropriate insurance coverage for long-distance transport.
Hiring a properly licensed mover protects you from fraud, unexpected subcontracting, and uninsured transport risks.
How is pricing structured for long-distance moves?
Long-distance residential moving costs depend on several factors, including:
• Distance traveled
• Volume or weight of belongings
• Access conditions at origin and destination
• Packing services requested
• Storage requirements
We provide written estimates outlining services and pricing structure before your move date. Transparent communication ensures you understand the scope of your relocation.
How far in advance should I schedule my long-distance move?
We recommend scheduling at least four weeks in advance, especially during peak moving season (late spring through early fall). Booking early allows for route planning, truck scheduling, and efficient coordination.
If your timeline is shorter, contact us to discuss availability.
Do you provide packing services for long-distance moves?
Yes. Professional packing is strongly recommended for interstate moves to reduce the risk of damage during extended transport. We offer full and partial packing services using high-quality materials and structured loading techniques.
Proper packing ensures:
• Stable box stacking
• Protection for fragile items
• Reduced shifting during transit
• Organized unloading at destination
Will my belongings be transferred between trucks?
Many national carriers transfer shipments between terminals, which can increase risk of damage and delays. We prioritize structured, controlled transport planning and clear communication about how your shipment will be handled.
Always ask your mover whether your items will remain on the same truck for the duration of the move.
Do you offer storage for long-distance moves?
Yes. Long-distance relocations sometimes require temporary storage due to closing dates, lease gaps, or construction timelines. We offer secure vault storage in a climate-controlled, professionally managed facility.
Unlike self-storage, items remain wrapped, inventoried, and monitored until redelivery is scheduled.
How long does a long-distance move take?
Transit time depends on distance, route planning, and scheduling logistics. Moves within neighboring Midwest states may take only a few days, while longer interstate relocations may require additional coordination.
We provide estimated delivery windows in advance and maintain communication throughout the process.
What should I keep with me during a long-distance move?
We recommend keeping essential items with you, including:
• Important documents
• Medications
• Jewelry and valuables
• Chargers and electronics
• Personal travel necessities
A clearly labeled “essentials box” can also make arrival at your new home more convenient.
What are red flags when hiring a long-distance mover?
Be cautious of companies that:
• Cannot provide a USDOT number
• Require large cash deposits
• Refuse to provide written estimates
• Subcontract without disclosure
• Offer pricing that seems unusually low
Verifying licensing and reviewing documentation protects your household and your investment.
Do you move families relocating to the Upper Peninsula?
Yes. We regularly assist families relocating from Lower Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and surrounding Midwest states to communities such as Marquette, Escanaba, Houghton, Iron Mountain, and Sault Ste. Marie.
Our familiarity with Upper Peninsula logistics, seasonal weather conditions, and rural access routes helps ensure efficient and organized delivery.
How do I begin planning my long-distance move?
The first step is requesting a consultation. We review your inventory, timeline, access conditions, and service needs before providing a written estimate. Early coordination ensures proper scheduling and smooth execution.

At Marquette Movers, we understand that long-distance moves often involve higher costs and higher stakes. It can be tempting to choose a lower-priced mover, but those savings frequently disappear through damaged belongings, poor communication, and missed timelines. When distance increases, so does the need for planning and accountability. Before choosing the cheapest option, we encourage you to speak with us. In many cases, we can offer competitive pricing without sacrificing care, coordination, or reliability.

Long-Distance Moving Process
Step-By-Step
Step One:
Our local booking agent will draft an estimate based on all
of the available information. We will ask for inventory, loading and/or unloading situation and detailed questions
about any specialty or oversized items

Finalize the Move
Step Two:
Secure the help you need by reading thru and agreeing to our service agreement, estimate and placing a fully refundable deposit.
Prepare for the day
Step Three:
Marquette Movers suggest that you begin packing upwards of two weeks before your move date, saving the kitchen and bathrooms last. Our team of packers can help
this process by bringing all appropriate materials such boxes, bubble-wrap, tape and markers - and accurately labeling for a smooth unload. If the customer prefers that they pack, we are happy to bring the materials to you at no extra cost,

Home Sweet Home
Step Four:
Moving Day(s)
You will be politely reminded of your move the day before, and once again when the movers are en route. Upon arrival, the movers will introduce themselves, and get all important information needed that was not previously gathered. Our driver will bring the moving truck as close as we reasonably can to the access point, while the movers make sure a path is clear, and floor runners are laid. At this point, any furniture not already disassembled will be broken down. It takes our crew three to five hours to pack a full truck. Depending on the time of day, we will decide on how far to drive once the truck is packed.
Each move is unique, and how we plan the logistics completely depends on the situation. Our promise is to be efficient with your time, and to have crystal clear communication throughout the entire process.
