In-Person Walk-Throughs vs. Phone Estimates: Which Type of Moving Estimate Is Right for You?

One of the first questions many customers ask when planning a move is, "Can you give me an estimate over the phone?"
The answer is: often, yes—but not always.
At Marquette Movers, we offer both phone estimates and free in-person walk-throughs because every move is different. While many smaller moves can be quoted accurately with a detailed phone conversation, larger or more complex moves often benefit from an in-person visit.
Our goal is simple: provide the most accurate estimate possible while making the process convenient for our customers.

When a Phone Estimate Works Well
Many moves can be estimated without visiting your home.
Phone estimates are often a great option when:
You're moving from a small apartment or condo.
The inventory is straightforward.
There are no oversized or specialty items.
You have a good understanding of what will be moving.
Time is limited and you need a quick estimate.
During the call, we'll ask detailed questions about:
The size of your home
The number of bedrooms
Large furniture items
Appliances
Boxes and storage totes
Stairs or elevators
Pickup and delivery locations
Packing services, if needed
The more accurate your inventory is, the more accurate your estimate will be.
When an In-Person Walk-Through Is Recommended
Some moves simply have too many variables to estimate accurately over the phone.
An in-person consultation allows us to evaluate the move firsthand and identify details that are easy to overlook.
We typically recommend a walk-through when:
You're moving from a larger home.
The move includes a garage, basement, attic, shed, or workshop.
You have antiques, artwork, pianos, gun safes, or other specialty items.
There are multiple pickup or delivery locations.
You need packing services.
Storage may be involved.
The property has difficult access, long driveways, or multiple flights of stairs.
Walking through the home helps us develop a more complete picture of the move before moving day.
Why We Prefer Walk-Throughs When Possible
Although phone estimates are convenient, an in-person visit often results in the most accurate estimate.
During a walk-through, we can:
Create a more accurate inventory.
Identify oversized or unusually heavy items.
Measure large furniture if necessary.
Evaluate entrances, stairways, and tight spaces.
Discuss packing needs.
Identify items requiring special equipment.
Plan truck size and crew requirements.
Answer questions face-to-face.
This helps reduce surprises for both you and our moving crew.
The Hidden Things People Forget
One of the biggest reasons estimates change is simple: people unintentionally forget what they own.
During phone estimates, customers commonly overlook items such as:
Garage contents
Basement storage
Attic items
Outdoor furniture
Grills
Lawn equipment
Holiday decorations
Freezers
Exercise equipment
Shelving units
Toolboxes
Recreational equipment
These items can significantly affect the time, labor, and truck space required.
A walk-through helps ensure nothing important is missed.
Walk-Throughs Help Us Prepare Better
An in-person consultation isn't just about pricing.
It also allows us to prepare the right equipment before moving day.
For example, we may determine that we'll need:
Furniture dollies
Appliance dollies
Piano equipment
Safe-moving equipment
Additional moving blankets
Extra crew members
Larger trucks
Planning ahead makes moving day safer and more efficient.
Can My Estimate Change?
Accurate estimates depend on accurate information.
If additional items are added after the estimate—or if areas that weren't discussed are included on moving day—the time and cost of the move may change.
That's why we encourage customers to mention everything they expect to move, even if they're unsure.
It's always better to overestimate than underestimate.
We Want to Make the Process Easy
Not every customer has time for an in-person visit, and we understand that.
That's why we offer flexible estimating options based on your schedule and the complexity of your move. For many smaller moves, a detailed phone estimate is all that's needed. For larger homes or more complex relocations, we may recommend a complimentary walk-through to provide the most accurate quote possible.
Our goal isn't to make the estimating process longer—it's to help you avoid surprises on moving day.
